so i'm giving [stumpwm] a try and of course there's a bug that doesn't
honour the [dvorak] keymap. there's a work-around at [bug#518183:
stumpwm: doesn't honour keyboard settings in xorg.conf][bug].

it looks like they're [working on a fix][fix]<sup>[dead link]</sup>, but until then i'll copy
[antony gelbergs' `.stumpwmrc`][bug].
